Chapel Hill Arts & Culture 1819/2019 art commission
In celebration of Chapel Hill government’s 200-year anniversary, I continued a body of work I began several years ago using archival visual materials. In these, I juxtapose unusual images from multiple eras, often in surprising, amusing, and absurdist ways, creating a conversation between the viewer in the present and the place in the past. These smaller images are then significantly enlarged, revealing the grit and interesting faults in the original printing process.
I worked with the Chapel Hill Historical Society and their archival collection, from which many of the base images were taken. The additional images were all cut from books, most of them vintage, that were destined for recycling. These books had been donated to the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library, but were deemed unsuitable for the book sale due to age or wear. These castoffs became fodder for the collages.
Below is a selection of some of the images in the exhibition.
