Improvisatory performance/poetry reading, 2014
Felix Obelix: soundpainting conductor
Collaborators: Ricky Garni (poetry), Doug Vuncannon (bass), Stuart Somer (keyboard), Stephen Cowles (sax and flute), Anne Gomez (sax), Chris Eubank (cello), and Katherine Gill (violin).
Performance at the Looking Glass Café, Carrboro, NC
In this performance, I conducted the Triangle Soundpainting Sextet in conjunction with and in response to Ricky Garni, reading from his work of poetry. Soundpainting is an improvisatory conducting language, where a soundpainter (a kind of conductor) gives gestural signals to the performers, who in turn interpret those signals to create an improvised piece in real time. No two performances are exactly alike.
