Holding a portable recording, I'm capturing field recordings of Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, NC.

    Dix in Sound in Situ

My next big project as Felix Obelix is Dix in Sound in Situ: A Traveling Audio Installation. Sponsored by Raleigh Arts, I will be composing an experimental audio piece to be premiered in Dix Park in Raleigh, NC on June 1. This is part of a festival of temporary art installations and performances running all weekend-long. Visitors to the park that weekend (and beyond that weekend) will download this audio piece to their phones, then walk a one-mile loop through the park. The piece will guide the listener through the park, touching on themes of the park’s history and the space itself. I plan to include interview snippets, music (of course), readings from books, articles, first documents, and field recordings.

And I need your help! As Dix Park was, until recently, the site of a hospital for the mentally ill, I hope to touch on themes of mental illness through this project. This is where you come in! I plan to incorporate some of the responses I receive through an anonymous voicemail hotline into the final audio piece. Please call 984 377 3477. I invite you to respond to this question: What about your experiences with mental illness do you wish that other people knew? This prompt is broad, so feel free to talk about whatever is most important to you. I will be cutting up your audio responses ethically and experimentally. Please feel free to share this widely!
